London-based Trini doctor on the challenges of coping with Long COVID
As governments around the world continue to grapple with the effects of COVID-19, health officials are drawing attention to another pandemic-related phenomenon.
What is it you ask? Long COVID.
Long COVID or Post COVID Syndrome is a group of symptoms that affect persons who have tested positive for the virus weeks and months after the initial infection.
As Dr Kizanne James-McCarthy explained, it is not isolated to those who have been acutely hospitalised, but anyone who has had a COVID-19 infection can be affected by it regardless of their age or background.
“Symptoms of Long COVID are varied and can affect multiple organ systems, but it mainly affects the respiratory, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. I have met persons affected by Long COVID who have continued breathlessness, headaches, body pains, chest pain, are unable to walk, have changes in their voice, long term coughing, weakness and fatigue, and brain- fog, among many other symptoms. These symptoms can also fluctuate in intensity or change as time progresses. Some have never fully recovered or have been debilitated by the disease. Some persons who were COVID-19 positive since the first wave (early March 2020) are still symptomatic and unable to return to their regular work and routines,” she said.
